First Draft Words & Writers United

What are your first draft words? Every time I start a first draft I want to die, because its bad… really, really bad. It is full of lazy verbs, vague descriptions, and brimming with first draft words. First draft words are crutch words–the words I use to get me into a scene or get two characters talking to one another. When I’m starting my 2nd draft, and re-reading that crap-tastic first version, I highlight first draft words and I compile …

LitUP

It’s a Saturday afternoon and I’m volunteering at a teen literary conference. I’m sitting at the book sales table talking to my new BFF, who’s name I can’t remember. The night before, she had asked about my shoes, “Were they comfortable when you got them?” In the midst of the very classy mixer, surrounded by very important people of all types, I delivered one of the most emphatic, “No”s of my life. “Oh good. I just got a pair and…” …

It’s Time for the LitUp Festival-Saturday 5/12/2018

Join me May 12th, 2018 at the Mid-Continent Public Library’s LitUp Festival. This all-day literary event was designed with teens in mind. I love when young fans get direct access to the creative minds that inspire them, and that’s exactly how MCPL set up the day. Teens are staffing the event and interviewing all of the panelists. MCPL’s done a phenomenal job putting together panels that include bestselling authors, screenwriters, poets, and illustrators. I’m fan-girling hard about the night’s keynote …

This post is dedicated to the questions ON WRITING. Check out my OFF WRITING post from October for insight in to my reading behavior and more.   How does writing create order for you? It’s the way …

My Fifteen Minutes on Artspeak Radio

Maria Vasquez Boyd is the penultimate advocate for Kansas City creatives of all types.  Every Wednesday she assembles a cast of talented individuals for her KKFI radio show–Artspeak Radio. I was lucky enough to be Maria’s first guest on August 9th of 2017, and we had a great chat about: my inspiration for The Color Eater, the state of women writers in the SFF realm, 80s action movies (of course!), and she was kind enough to let me read my …

KC Creates Interview-Caleb Harman

Caleb Harman is a hell of an artist and the penultimate creator—which is why I decided to make him the first non-writer interview in my podcast series. I know absolutely nothing about art, and was a little worried my lack of knowledge would lead to a crap interview, but it turns out creativity doesn’t care what medium we work in. Caleb and I had plenty to talk about including: How a childhood diagnosis changed his awareness of the world and …
