2018 Best Reads

I read 80 books in 2018. Since my Goodreads goal was 75, that makes me pretty happy. By read, I mean all the way to “the end.” If I give up on a book it doesn’t count toward my goal. Sometimes, if I’m slogging through a book, guilting myself to get to the last page, I’ll ask one of my writer friends for permission to stop reading. For some reason that helps. I make a point to read outside my …

LitUP

It’s a Saturday afternoon and I’m volunteering at a teen literary conference. I’m sitting at the book sales table talking to my new BFF, who’s name I can’t remember. The night before, she had asked about my shoes, “Were they comfortable when you got them?” In the midst of the very classy mixer, surrounded by very important people of all types, I delivered one of the most emphatic, “No”s of my life. “Oh good. I just got a pair and…” …

It’s Time for the LitUp Festival-Saturday 5/12/2018

Join me May 12th, 2018 at the Mid-Continent Public Library’s LitUp Festival. This all-day literary event was designed with teens in mind. I love when young fans get direct access to the creative minds that inspire them, and that’s exactly how MCPL set up the day. Teens are staffing the event and interviewing all of the panelists. MCPL’s done a phenomenal job putting together panels that include bestselling authors, screenwriters, poets, and illustrators. I’m fan-girling hard about the night’s keynote …

The List

•    Narrate an audio book. •    Travel to a foreign country on book tour. •    Receive unsolicited fan art. In 5th grade Owen has already accomplished something I aspire to do in my career. He created something that positively impacted another human. He helped me achieve one of my life-long goals by sending me my first, completely unsolicited, piece of fan art.  Owen created something based on his personal experience of an author coming to talk to his class, he …

My final issue of Kansas City Voices

I’ve signed off on the galleys for my final issue of Kansas City Voices magazine, and we should have it back from the printer in early October.  The official launch party is Saturday, October 28th, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at The Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO, 64111. I’m proud of the work I’ve done over the past seven years, and now it’s time for me to put the magazine business behind me and focus on my own …

My Fifteen Minutes on Artspeak Radio

Maria Vasquez Boyd is the penultimate advocate for Kansas City creatives of all types.  Every Wednesday she assembles a cast of talented individuals for her KKFI radio show–Artspeak Radio. I was lucky enough to be Maria’s first guest on August 9th of 2017, and we had a great chat about: my inspiration for The Color Eater, the state of women writers in the SFF realm, 80s action movies (of course!), and she was kind enough to let me read my …

I’ve had loads of weird raffle prizes donated, and you can win any of them.  Even if you can’t make it to the event, you still have a chance to win: A character’s name in my next novel— The winner of this raffle will pick the name of a character …

KC Writes Interview-Jeanette Powers

I count myself very fortunate to have spent an hour with the indomitable Jeanette Powers for my latest KC Writes Interview. And, I think today, on the eve of her new book launch, is a great time for me to share the interview with you. Jeanette is one of the hardest working women I have ever met, and is the penultimate community builder and facilitator of performance, literary, and visual arts in Kansas City. Always engaging and incredibly intelligent check …
