Maria Vasquez Boyd is the penultimate advocate for Kansas City creatives of all types. Every Wednesday she assembles a cast of talented individuals for her KKFI radio show–Artspeak Radio.
I was lucky enough to be Maria’s first guest on August 9th of 2017, and we had a great chat about: my inspiration for The Color Eater, the state of women writers in the SFF realm, 80s action movies (of course!), and she was kind enough to let me read my essay “100 Rejections. Let’s Celebrate.” on air.
I wasn’t the only working artist in the room though, Regina Del Carmen went acoustic and shared two phenomenal songs, Debbie Barrett-Jones & Kristine Barrett gave us a glimpse of their collective works as a sound artist and weaver, Rochelle Wisoff Fields showed great examples of how novel excerpts can be transformed in to flash fiction, and Angie Jennings & Ron Anderson of the Kansas City Society for Contemporary Photography shared insights in to Kansas City’s talented photography scene.

Thanks Maria! The interview was a great experience, and I appreciate all that you do for Kansas City creatives.
