Most people think they’re coming to coaching to learn; in reality they’re coming to unlearn.
They sign up for coaching because they feel “stuck,” “blocked,” or “need to learn more.” But honestly, I’ve never met a writer, artist, or musician who didn’t intuitively know how to create their art. Sure, they can always refine their craft and practices—but that’s not the reason their career isn’t progressing.
99% of the time, the reason they are stuck is because they’ve internalized beliefs intended for a non-creative existence.
The beliefs show up in coaching sessions through statements like:
· I have to know what I am doing.
· If I had all the time/resources I would create more.
· This is a solo career.
· I’ll always be a starving artist.
· If I dream big and it doesn’t happen it will hurt more.
· People want me to fail, and the system is against me.
· I have complete ownership over my creation.
· I must choose to be only one type of creator.
· I should… [insert a myriad of things here]
· I can just create; my manager/agent/accountant/etc. will take care of the business/money/marketing, etc.
· I must not really want it, because I’m not doing it. a/k/a/ I have the ability to act but am paralyzed.
You have creativity hard wired into your DNA, so those inherited beliefs cause a lot of cognitive dissonance and counter living a fully creative existence.
You have the choice to let misbeliefs go and replace them with something aligned to your creative life. The first step is opening up to the possibility that letting go of those inherited beliefs is a choice you have the power to make.
