Join Me at the NEBULA AWARDS!!!!

I am very excited to announce I’ve been invited to be a panelist at this year’s Nebula Awards conference in Pasadena, CA.

When: June 6-9th, 2024. My specific panel is at 4:30 p.m. PST, Friday June 7, 2024

Where: The Westin Pasadena, 191 N. Los Robles Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101 AND Online

What I’ll be talking about: Write Well, Stay Well: Self-care for Authors. This panel offers tips and tricks for authors to engage in self-care, for both their physical bodies & their mental health.

The inside scoop: The Nebula Awards are like the Oscars for Sci-fi/Fantasy writers. There’s a red-carpet gala Saturday night that is live-streamed and the conference has a virtual option as well.

I’ve applied to speak at this conference the last 3? years. This year they not only placed me on a panel, SFWA was generous enough to provide me a scholarship for the $449 conference fee. I’m equally excited and overwhelmed at the opportunity.

I’m excited because I know I will slay that panel. I’m a great speaker and my coaching work makes me the perfect person for this particular topic.

I’m overwhelmed because this is the type of industry conference where major players show up, and it’s highly unlikely I’m going to know anyone at the conference. The thought of constant peopling, walking a red carpet, and the travel involved to an unfamiliar city may have made past-me decline the invite.

But, one of the things I tell myself every single morning is Doors open for me, and I walk through them. A gargantuan door just opened, and I just need to be brave enough to walk through it–so I am.

How you can help: If you’re going to the conference, please let me know. It would be great to meet a friendly human in real life and not feel so… alone and scared. (Register here for in-person or online access.)

Or if you have a friend attending & you think we’d click, an e-mail introduction to them beforehand would be lovely.

I’ll be at the conference Thursday evening, Friday, & Saturday. I know I’ll meet people there, but a person or two to look forward to feels reassuring.

Assist with the costs of attending the conference. Conference panel speaking gigs are not paid and do not cover the cost of travel. For this trip I’m anticipating around $2,250 of out-of-pocket expenses for:

  • Hotel – 3 nights – $725
  • Flight – Roundtrip – $650
  • Car service – $300
  • Gala Banquet food expense – $125
  • Dress rental – $100 – (Oddly enough the girl who works in her pajamas every day doesn’t have one formal gown in her closet.)
  • Food -$250

What I’ve learned from this so far: 3 seems to be the lucky number for level ups for me. I pitched Jane Friedman for three years before she booked me for a speaking gig. I pitched this conference for three years as well.

“Time is always in my favor. Time is always on my side.” (Another thing I tell myself every day.) I’m a much different speaker now than I was three years ago. I can help writers on a deeper level now than I ever have been able to before.

Energetically for six months I’ve been getting a message I needed to get an “authentic wardrobe.” (I’m not a shopper, and don’t buy new clothes regularly. I’ve still been wearing sweaters from my corporate days 10+ years ago.) I now understand that direction was to prep me being fully comfortable in my skin when I walk into this conference.

Start a travel savings account for unexpected, must walk through the new door, opportunities. Additionally, save my company credit card rewards point specifically for unexpected travel.

I’m so curious where this adventure goes next. Energetically I’ve been shown things hit a point where they start to go very, very fast. I’m wondering if this may be the beginning of it. Regardless, I’m so glad you’re here with me!
